Tile is not waterproof. Grout is not waterproof. The two of them together make a surface that sheds most of the water most of the time, and lets the rest through to whatever is behind them. That is not a defect — it is how tile has always worked. The waterproofing is the layer underneath, and it is the only thing standing between your shower and the framing.
It is also the layer nobody sees, which is why it is the first thing cut when a quote needs to come down. You cannot photograph it. You cannot point at it when a neighbor asks. Six weeks after the job it looks identical to the same bathroom done properly, and it stays looking identical for about three years.
What actually happens behind a shower wall
Water arrives at a tiled wall in three ways: as spray, as vapor, and as capillary movement through the grout joints. Spray is the obvious one and the least damaging, because most of it runs down the face and into the drain. Vapor is not obvious at all. A hot shower fills the room with moisture that moves through grout and thinset the way it moves through any porous material, and it keeps moving until it hits something that stops it.
If nothing stops it, it reaches the substrate. If the substrate is ordinary drywall, it softens. Paper-faced gypsum in a wet wall is a slow-motion failure: the board loses strength, the tile loses its grip, and mold gets a food source in a warm dark cavity. By the time a tile sounds hollow when you tap it, the board behind it has usually been gone for a year.
The point of a waterproofing layer is to stop that journey at a controlled place, on the room side of the framing, and send the water back to the drain.
The three approaches, and what each one is good at
There are three assemblies in common use. All three work. They fail in different ways, cost different amounts, and suit different rooms.
Cement backer board
A cement-based panel replaces drywall in the wet area. It does not soften when it gets wet and it does not feed mold. On its own, though, backer board is water-resistant, not waterproof — water passes through it. It has to be paired with a moisture barrier, either behind the board or applied to its face.
Where people get this wrong is doing both. A vapor barrier behind the board and a waterproof coating on its face makes a sandwich that traps moisture between two impermeable layers with nowhere to dry. Pick one side and commit to it.
Liquid-applied membrane
A liquid membrane is rolled or troweled onto the substrate and cures into a continuous waterproof skin, with reinforcing fabric at the corners, the seams and around the drain. It is the most forgiving system to fit into an odd-shaped room, because it has no panel sizes to work around — it goes wherever the brush goes.
Its weakness is that it depends entirely on being applied at the right thickness. Too thin and it is a colored stain rather than a membrane, and there is no way to tell by looking once the tile is on. This is a system where who does the work matters more than what they bought.
Sheet membrane
A bonded sheet membrane is a manufactured waterproof layer set into thinset over the substrate, with taped and sealed seams. Because it arrives at a consistent factory thickness, it removes the main variable in the liquid system. The corners, the seams and the pipe penetrations are where a sheet system lives or dies, and every manufacturer sells preformed pieces for exactly those places.
It is generally the most expensive of the three in material, and the fastest to get right.
The places that actually leak
In fifteen years of opening up other people's showers, almost none of the failures we find are in the middle of a wall. The flat field is the easy part. Water gets out at transitions:
- Inside corners, where two planes meet and the building moves.
- The wall-to-floor joint, which takes the most water in the room.
- The curb, which is wet on three faces and often built from something that wicks.
- Pipe and valve penetrations, which are holes cut through the one layer whose whole job is having no holes in it.
- The niche, which is five more corners and a sloped shelf, added because it looks good in a photograph.
A niche is worth having. It is also the single most common place we find water behind tile, because it multiplies the number of corners in a shower and it usually gets built last, by whoever is left. If you want one, it is worth asking specifically how it will be waterproofed and sloped.
Slope, and the thing about the drain
A shower floor has to fall to the drain, and so does the waterproofing under it. On a traditional mortar-bed floor there are two layers of slope — the pre-slope under the pan liner, and the mortar bed above it. Skip the pre-slope and the liner becomes a flat tray that holds standing water permanently under your tile. It will not leak into the room. It will just never dry, and the floor will smell.
Modern bonded systems solve this differently, with a pre-sloped foam tray and a membrane bonded to its surface, so there is only one wet plane and it is the top one. Either approach works. What does not work is half of one and half of the other, which is what you get when someone changes method partway through because a material did not arrive.
If you are considering a curbless shower, this is the part that changes most — the floor structure has to drop to keep the slope without a curb to contain it, and that is a framing decision made long before anyone orders tile.
How this shows up in a quote
You will not usually see a line called "waterproofing" with a number beside it. You will see it in the difference between two quotes for the same bathroom, where one is meaningfully cheaper and neither document explains why.
Ask directly. The question is not "is it waterproofed" — everyone says yes. The questions worth asking are:
- Which system, by name, and is it one manufacturer's system throughout?
- How are the inside corners and the wall-to-floor joint treated?
- Is there a pre-slope, or a pre-sloped tray?
- Who does the waterproofing — the tile setter, or a different trade?
- Is it inspected or photographed before the tile goes on?
That last one is the useful one. A crew that photographs the membrane before tiling is a crew that expects to be asked. On our own jobs the waterproofing sits in its own stage of the scope, before any finish material arrives on site, because the sequence is the point: nothing gets tiled over a wall we would not want to look at again.

What it costs, roughly
We do not publish our own prices, for the reason we give everywhere else: a number written before anyone has seen your bathroom is a guess. What we can point at is what independent research says people in this market spend, so you have somewhere to start.
Waterproofing is a small fraction of that in material and a meaningful fraction in labor, and it is the part of the budget with the worst ratio of visible result to consequence. It is also the only part that, done wrong, takes the rest of the bathroom with it.
Older houses, and what we find
Around Fishers, Carmel and Noblesville a lot of the housing stock we work in was built when a plastic sheet stapled over studs was considered adequate, and much of it has held up fine because the bathroom was used gently. What we tend to find when a wall comes open is not a dramatic leak but a slow one: a damp line at the bottom plate, a soft patch at the corner of a tub surround, a stud face darkened where a valve was set.
None of that is visible from the room. It is why we open the wall and look before quoting a number, rather than after — which is the same reason what is behind the wall is one of the four things that move a bathroom quote at all.
The short version
If you remember one thing: the tile is a finish, not a barrier. The barrier is behind it, it is chosen and installed before anything you can see, and it is the only part of a bathroom that cannot be corrected later without taking the bathroom apart.
Everything else in the room — the tile format, the vanity, the lighting — is a preference. This one is not.
