A countertop quote usually arrives as one line and one number. The line names the material. The number covers everything that has to happen to that material before it becomes a counter — which is why two quotes for the same slab, in the same kitchen, can land a long way apart with nothing in either document to explain the gap.
The slab is the part you picked in a showroom. The rest is fabrication: how many separate pieces the top ends up in, where they meet, how many holes get drilled through it, and what shape the exposed edges are cut to. None of that is on the sample chip, and most of it gets settled on template day, in a conversation nobody writes down.
You are buying a slab, not a countertop
Stone and quartz are sold by the slab, and your counters get nested into that slab the way parts get nested into a sheet of plywood. The piece lifted out of the sink cutout is waste unless it becomes a windowsill somewhere else in the house. So the first question that moves the price is not which material — it is how many slabs your kitchen takes.
A long island, a perimeter run you want unbroken, and a full-height slab backsplash can each push a job from one slab to two — a real jump in cost with no visible change in the room. With natural stone it also decides whether both pieces came off the same block, which is what lets a pattern carry across a joint, and is part of why choosing a material means choosing actual slabs. Ask how many yours consumes. A shop that has run the layout answers immediately.
Why a seam exists at all
Some seams are a choice. Most are not.
Slabs come in finite sizes, and a kitchen wall does not care. A run longer than the slab gets a seam because physics says so. Beyond that, three things force seams into kitchens that would otherwise not need them.
The route into the house. A piece has to come through a door, past a newel post, and across a floor that is already finished. Stone is heavy and it does not flex. A tight hall in an older Hamilton County house can force a seam that has nothing to do with the size of the slab.
Inside corners. An L cut from a single piece has an inside corner that is the weakest point on the whole top. It wants to crack there under its own weight on the way in, and again later if anything below it moves. Many shops will not ship one, or will only ship it with steel or fiberglass rod epoxied into the underside. A seam near that corner is frequently the sounder build, not the cheaper shortcut.
Support underneath. Stone spanning a dishwasher opening or a slide-in range has no cabinet beneath it. Those gaps get a batten fixed across the cabinets first, and where a seam falls relative to them matters.
Where a seam should fall
The rules are consistent between shops, and worth knowing so you can tell whether the answer you get is considered.
- Away from cutouts. The stone beside a sink or in front of a cooktop is already a narrow rail, and putting a joint through a narrow rail stacks two weaknesses in one place.
- Over solid support, not over an appliance opening.
- On the shorter, quieter run rather than through the middle of the working surface, where you will look at it every day.
- Somewhere your eye already stops — at a change in direction, or where a run meets a wall.
We tape the proposed seam locations onto the cabinets before the templater arrives, and walk them with you. It is a short conversation, and it removes the single most common countertop disappointment there is.
What makes a seam disappear, and what makes you see it forever
Flatness comes first, and it is not the fabricator's job. Two pieces set on cabinets that were never shimmed level meet with a lip you can catch with a fingernail, and no epoxy fixes that. What sits underneath decides what the finish can be, the same way leveling a subfloor decides whether tile lies flat.
Then the joint itself. Seam setters pull the two pieces tight and flush with suction, the gap gets filled with epoxy tinted to your actual slab rather than to the sample, and the joint is dressed back. On a uniform quartz the result can be genuinely hard to find. On a heavily veined material it depends on whether the veins were matched across the joint — and vein matching costs yield and shop hours, so it has to be asked for before anything goes on the saw.
Nobody should tell you a seam will be invisible. In raking light from a window you will find it. The realistic goal is a joint you stop noticing once the kitchen is back in use.
Cutouts, one at a time
Every hole in a countertop is labor, and each kind of hole is a different amount of it.
The sink
An undermount sink leaves the cut edge exposed inside the bowl opening, so that edge gets polished by hand to match the face. A drop-in sink hides its cut edge under a rim, so the cut can be rougher and quicker. That difference alone separates two quotes.
Undermount brings a second decision, the reveal — how the stone lines up with the sink opening:
- Positive reveal. The cutout is wider than the bowl, so a strip of the sink rim stays visible. The most forgiving to fabricate, and a ledge you will be wiping.
- Negative reveal. The stone runs slightly over the opening and hides the rim entirely. Clean to look at, harder to get right.
- Flush, or zero, reveal. Stone and sink line up exactly. It is the hardest of the three, the least forgiving of any error, and any drift shows along the whole length of the cut.
An undermount hangs from the stone on clips and epoxy, and a heavy cast iron or fireclay bowl gets rails or a cradle built into the cabinet so it is not asking the counter to carry it.
One scheduling point catches people out: the actual sink has to be on site for template. Not the spec sheet, not the model number — the sink. An apron front sink goes further and gets installed first, in a cabinet already modified for it, so the stone is scribed to the sink that exists rather than the one in a catalog.
The cooktop, and the range
A drop-in cooktop is an internal cutout in the middle of the field, with radiused corners because a square inside corner in stone is a crack waiting for a reason. The rail of stone in front of a cooktop is the most fragile piece in the kitchen, and it usually gets rodded underneath before it travels.
A slide-in range opens the run instead, which is structurally easier and puts cut stone edges directly against a heat source. If the counter is quartz, that adjacency is worth understanding first, because the binder is the part of quartz that gives out under heat.
Everything else that gets drilled
Faucet, side sprayer, soap dispenser, air gap, filtered water dispenser, instant hot, and any pop-up power outlet in an island. Each one is a core drill and each one is priced. Count them at template and count them out loud, against the actual faucet you bought.
A hole added after installation gets drilled in place, over your cabinets, with water running and a vacuum going. It can be done. It is neither free nor risk-free, and it is a textbook small change order nobody saw coming.
The edge is not a free choice
Edge profile is priced by the linear foot and applies to every exposed run in the room. That multiplication is what people miss: a small upgrade on a sample board becomes a real number across an island, a peninsula and two walls.
The simple profiles — a square edge with the arris eased, or a light bevel — are a pass or two on a machine. Shaped profiles add passes and hand polishing. A built-up edge glues a strip underneath so a thinner slab reads as a thick one, which is more material and a glue line the shop has to make vanish. A mitred edge folds the material at the corner, and it is how a thick edge gets made out of porcelain or a thin sintered sheet. A waterfall leg is a whole extra piece, a mitre, a vein continuation, and a change to the cabinet end panel and the flooring under it.
There is a practical side showrooms rarely raise. Recessed profiles hold crumbs and standing water along the front. A hard square edge on an island sits at hip height in a room people move through quickly. An eased square edge is the default in most kitchens for reasons that have nothing to do with taste.
If a quote has to come down, the edge is one of the few places you can move the number honestly, without removing anything that protects the house.
Overhang, and what holds it up
An island overhang for seating carries itself only so far before it needs steel flat bar let into the cabinet top, or corbels under it. How far depends on the material and the thickness — a fabricator's answer about your slab, not a number a blog should hand you. What matters here is timing: the support goes in while the cabinets are still open, which makes it a cabinet decision and a seating decision at once, part of the same conversation as the clearances around an island.
Template day decides all of it
By the time the templater arrives, the cabinets are set, fastened, shimmed and level, and the sink, faucet and cooktop are on site. Walls in a real house are not straight, so the template scribes them.
Bring the decisions with you. Every one of them is cheaper as a sentence than as a correction:
- Where do the seams fall, and what supports them?
- Which slabs, and where does the pattern land relative to the sink cutout?
- Undermount or drop-in, and which reveal?
- How many holes, for which fixtures, by name?
- Which edge profile, on which runs?
- How far does the overhang go, and what holds it up?
Ask for the layout drawing showing where each piece falls on the slab. Any shop running digital templating can produce one. And if a sink or a range is moving, the plumbing and electrical rough-in has to be finished before any of this happens, which is why moving a sink or range reorders the schedule rather than adding a line to it.
What it costs, roughly

Independent research on this market puts a typical Indianapolis kitchen remodel in the region of $18,000 to $24,000, with one national dataset putting the average Indianapolis kitchen project at about $25,000 — roughly 46% below the national average.

A quote showing countertops as a single line has folded all of that into one figure and left you nothing to compare, which is the same problem as any other unitemized bid and the reason reading an estimate line by line repays the effort.
The short version
Fabrication is the half of a countertop quote nobody compares, and the half that decides what the kitchen looks like up close. Where the seams fall, whether they are supported, how the sink meets the stone, how many holes got counted, and what the edge costs across every run — those are the questions. The material was the easy part.
