Glass gets shopped last and decided first. By the time anyone is looking at hinge finishes, the wall behind the tile has either been built to carry a frameless door or it has not, and there is no way to add what is missing without taking tile off. The glass is the last thing installed in a bathroom and one of the earliest things that has to be settled.
The choice is not really about looks either. Framed, semi-frameless and frameless are three structural arrangements wearing three faces. One of them asks your wall to hold a door. The other two hold it themselves, inside an aluminum frame that also quietly swallows every place your shower is not plumb, level or square.
What the three types actually are
Framed
A framed enclosure captures every edge of every piece of glass in aluminum. Wall jambs on both sides, a track at the bottom, a header across the top, and a frame around the door leaf itself. The glass is thin because it does not need to be stiff. The frame is the structure and the glass is infill.
That frame is also a tolerance-eating device. Jambs get scribed to the tile and bedded in sealant, the header can be cut down on site, and if a wall leans a little the channel hides it. Framed units carry the most sealing in them too: vinyl wipes down the jambs, a sweep along the bottom of the door, and a track with a dam in it that sends water back toward the drain.
Semi-frameless
Semi-frameless keeps the channels on the fixed panels and at the walls and takes the frame off the door. The door edge is bare glass. The hinges or pivots mount to the jamb or to the fixed panel rather than into your wall.
It is an honest middle, and it gets dismissed too quickly. You get the open edge where you actually look at it, the wall still carries no hinge load, and the fixed panels sit in channels that can be adjusted to a wall that is out of plumb.
Frameless
Frameless is heavy glass with no perimeter frame at all. The panels are the structure. Hinges clamp the door and bolt through the tile into the wall behind it. Fixed panels are held by clamps at the wall and glass-to-glass clips at the corners, and a tall or wide panel gets a support bar running back to a wall or the ceiling. That bar is not trim. It is what stops a large sheet flexing at the top, and asking for it to be left out because it spoils the look is a request we will push back on.
Every one of those connections is a load path, and all of them end in your framing.
Frameless glass is held by your walls
Blocking goes in before the substrate
A frameless door puts its entire weight into a small number of hinges, and every swing tries to rotate them off the wall. Screws into tile and cement board will not hold that. They need solid wood in the stud bay behind — blocking, set flat between the studs at the height the hinges will land.
Which means the hinge layout has to be roughly known while the wall is open, before the substrate, long before anyone has chosen a door. So we block generously: a continuous horizontal band across the hinge wall rather than two small pads, so the door can move up or down and still land on wood. It costs almost nothing while the studs are visible. It is the difference between a clean install and a man on a stepladder hunting for a stud with a magnet.
If you are taking a tub out and the wall is coming apart anyway, this is close to free to add — one of the quiet arguments for doing a tub-to-shower conversion as one job rather than in stages.
Every hinge screw is a hole in the waterproofing
The hinges land on the wet face. Their fasteners go through tile, through thinset, through the membrane and into the blocking. Each one is a deliberate puncture in the layer whose entire job is having no punctures in it — the layer described in what goes behind the tile.
Done properly, sealant goes into the hole and under the hardware base before the fastener does, and it is a non-event. Skipped, you get a slow wet stud with a polished hinge screwed to the front of it, and no symptom in the room for years.
Plumb, level and square
A frameless panel is a rigid rectangle, cut once. If the wall it stands against leans, the gap between glass and tile opens into a wedge, and the silicone joint filling it gets fat at one end. There is no channel to hide behind and no way to adjust it out.
So before anyone commits to frameless we check the framing the same way every time. Are both walls plumb. Is the curb or the shower floor level along the line the glass will sit on. Is the return square to the back wall. While the walls are open those are cheap to correct — shim a stud, plane one, move the tile plane. After the tile is on they are permanent, and the glass either lives with them or you buy a frame to cover them.
Curbless makes this sharper, because there is no curb to land the panel on and the floor under it is sloping. Where the glass sits, and how far the wet zone runs past it, is part of the curbless decision rather than a separate conversation later.
Why the glass is measured after the tile
Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled or notched after it is tempered. Every hinge cutout, handle hole and corner notch is made in the annealed sheet, and then the whole thing goes through the furnace. Get a dimension wrong and nobody trims it down. The panel is remade.
That is why a glass shop templates the finished opening — not the framing, not the substrate, not the tile as drawn on a plan. The actual tile, grouted, with the curb built and the walls done. A template taken on an unfinished bathroom is a guess about a surface that does not exist yet.
Two things follow. The first is sequence: there is a stretch at the end of a bathroom where the room is complete and the shower still cannot be used, because it has no door. The second is lead time, which belongs to the fabricator and not to us — so we ask the shop for their current turnaround at the walkthrough rather than the week the tile finishes.
Framed units are more forgiving here too. Many are stock sizes trimmed to fit on site, so a framed door goes in sooner and against wider tolerances. If it is the only bathroom in the house, that matters more than the look does.
Water leaves a frameless shower differently
A framed door is sealed nearly the whole way around. Wipes at the jambs, a sweep at the bottom, a track that dams water back inside. It is not elegant and it is very good at containment.
Frameless has a sweep on the bottom of the door and not much else. There is a deliberate gap at the hinge side and usually a shadow gap at the top. Water is meant to be handled by the shower, not by the door — which makes the layout part of the glass decision:
- Where the head points. A showerhead aimed anywhere near the door line will find the gaps. A fixed panel standing between the head and the opening solves most of it.
- Which way the door swings. Frameless doors generally swing out, or out and in. Out means the wet inside face passes over your bathroom floor every time it opens, which is exactly what a drip rail on the bottom edge is for.
- How the floor slopes. Water must be moving away from the opening the whole way to the drain, not pooling at the threshold.
- Where the wet zone stops. On a low curb or a curbless build the waterproofing has to carry on well past where the glass lands.
- What the track is fastened to. Nothing gets screwed down through the top of a curb. A bottom track is bedded in sealant and the jambs are fastened to the wall face above the pan. A crew that puts fasteners through a curb has put holes in the bottom of your shower.
Over a tub, and the panel with no door
Sliding bypass doors on a tub are usually framed or semi-frameless, and there are good reasons for that. No swing clearance to find in a small room, no hinge load going into a wall, and a track that can be shimmed to a tub rim that is not level. Tub rims very often are not.
The frameless fixed panel with no door — a single sheet at one end of a tub or a walk-in — is a real option with a real limit. It needs a support bar, the rim or curb under it has to be level, and water still leaves at the open end. It works when the head is at the far end and aimed away from the opening. It does not work because it looked good in a photograph of a larger bathroom than yours.
Hard water, coatings and what maintenance actually is
Water here is hard. What builds up on glass is mineral deposit, and left alone it etches into the surface instead of sitting on it. Past that point it is not dirt any more, it is texture, and no cleaner brings it back. Factory-applied hydrophobic coatings help, and they are consumable — anyone describing one as permanent is selling you something. What keeps glass clear is a squeegee kept inside the shower and used every time, on the cheapest framed door and the heaviest frameless panel alike.
Low-iron glass only shows up on frameless. Ordinary glass carries a green cast you read at the exposed edges, and the thicker the sheet the more of it you see. On a framed door the edges live in a channel and it never comes up.
Where this lands in a quote
Glass is the line item most often carried as an allowance, because it is the one thing that genuinely cannot be measured until the end. That is fine as long as you know it is an allowance, and it is worth reading that line the way you would read any other line on an estimate: what is it for, who sets the final number, and what happens if it comes back higher.

Glass sits inside that as one of the larger single purchases in the room, and the gap between a stock framed door and a made-to-measure frameless enclosure is one of the wider swings a single choice makes in a bathroom.
What to ask before the glass is ordered
- Is there blocking behind the tile for hinges, and where does it run?
- Who templates — the glass shop, on the finished tile, or the contractor with a tape measure?
- Which way does the door swing, and what is under it when it swings that way?
- Is anything being fastened through the curb or the pan?
- How are the hinge penetrations sealed through the waterproofing?
- What is the fabricator's current lead time, and when does the order get placed?
The first one separates a shower designed around its glass from a shower that had glass added afterwards. Ask it early, while somebody can still act on the answer.
The short version
Frameless is not an upgrade you pick at the end. It is a set of demands on the wall, the tile plane and the waterproofing, and every one of them is cheap to meet before the substrate goes up and expensive to meet after. Framed and semi-frameless are not the compromise they get treated as — they forgive an older house, they seal better, and they go in faster.
