Pulling a tub out is the easy part. A reciprocating saw, a couple of trips to the dumpster, and the alcove is empty. Everything that decides whether the conversion was a good idea happens after that — where the drain ends up, which way the joists run, what is behind the valve wall, and whether the house still has a bathtub in it when you are finished.
Most of the conversions we get asked about are worth doing. The ones that are not tend to be the same case every time, and it is worth getting that out of the way before anyone talks about tile.
Start with how many tubs the house is left with
If the tub coming out is the last one in the house, stop and think about it properly. A house with no bathing fixture anywhere reads differently to a buyer with a toddler, and to an appraiser comparing your house to the one down the street that still has one. We are not going to pretend to know what your house is worth. The question belongs to you and your agent, not to a showroom, and it is much cheaper to ask now than to put a tub back later.
In most of the houses we work in around Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield the answer is simple: there is a hall bath upstairs with a tub in it, and the conversion is happening in the primary suite. The primary loses a tub nobody has filled in years, the hall bath keeps one for resale, and the two rooms end up doing different jobs — which is how we would spend on them differently anyway.
The harder version is a ranch with one full bath. There, taking the tub out narrows the pool of people who can live in the house. Sometimes that is still the right call — if you are staying put and stepping over a tub wall is already a daily risk, the tub is not an asset, it is a hazard. But it should be a decision you made, not a decision the demo crew made for you.
What is actually under a tub
A tub drains at one end. A shower usually drains near the middle of its floor, or along one wall if you are running a linear drain. So in almost every conversion, the drain moves.
Below the floor there is a P-trap and a trap arm running off to the stack, and under a tub that assembly sits wherever it suited the tub. Moving it means opening the ceiling below, or the floor above, and finding out what is in the way. Three things decide how bad that is.
Which way the joists run
If the joists run parallel to the long side of the alcove, the plumber has a clear bay to work in and the trap can slide along it. If they run across it, the trap has to cross framing, and framing is not something you notch to suit a drain. Drilling a joist is governed by where in the depth of the member the hole lands; a trap needs vertical room that a shallow joist bay may not have. Sometimes the fix is a header and a sistered joist. Sometimes it is putting the drain where the framing allows and designing the shower around it.
How far the vent is
A trap has to sit within a set distance of its vent, and that distance is code, not preference. Move a trap far enough from the wet wall and the existing vent no longer serves it, and then you are adding a vent — which means opening more wall, and possibly going up through a bedroom closet or into the attic. This is the part that quietly turns a modest conversion into a bigger one, and it is invisible from the bathroom door.
Whether you are on a slab
A first-floor bath over a crawl space is straightforward to reach. A bath on slab is a different job: relocating the drain means cutting concrete, and every one of the constraints that governs a basement bathroom rough-in shows up here too — where the line runs, how deep it is, and what the slope has to be from the trap back to the main.
None of this is exotic. It is just the reason a conversion quote that was written from the doorway is worth very little.
The valve wall
A tub-and-shower valve has a diverter in it and a spout below it. A shower-only valve has neither. So the valve comes out, the drop-ear ell that fed the spout gets removed and capped, and the new valve goes in higher, at a rough-in height set for standing rather than sitting. That is a plumbing change inside a wall, not a fixture swap.
While that wall is open, two things are worth doing. The first is a pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve — an anti-scald valve is what a shower should have, and there is no sense in reusing an old two-handle mixer. The second is blocking: solid backing behind the tile for a grab bar, a bench, a hand-shower slide bar, glass hinges. It costs almost nothing while the studs are open and cannot be added later without taking tile off. Even if you never fit a grab bar, put the backing in.
Worth checking before you commit: what is on the other side of that wall. If the valve wall backs onto a closet or a hallway, some of the work can be done from behind and the tile side stays smaller. If it backs onto a finished staircase or a masonry chase, it cannot.
One-for-one, or wider
The cheapest conversion fills the alcove the tub already occupied. Three walls exist, the pocket is the right shape, and the plumbing stays in the same wall. That is the version we quote most, and there is nothing second-best about it.
Widening is where it gets expensive. Push the shower out and you take that space from something — the vanity, the door swing, the clearance in front of the toilet. Move a wall and you have moved the vanity's plumbing and its lighting with it. That trade is the whole subject of laying out a small bathroom without moving the plumbing, and the honest answer is that it depends on which of the three fixtures you are willing to shift.
Then there is the curb. A curb contains water and leaves the floor structure alone. Going curbless means the shower floor has to sit lower than the bathroom floor to hold slope, and on a joisted floor that is a framing job decided long before tile — what changes under the floor is a separate decision from the one you think you are making. If the reason for the conversion is mobility, it is the decision that matters most.
Glass is the last thing to order and the first thing to plan for. Frameless panels want plumb walls and a flat curb, older houses are neither by default, and the panels get templated after the tile is set — so the walls have to be built to a tolerance somebody is going to measure.
Taking out a tub takes out your waterproofing
This is the part that gets underestimated, and it is the reason a conversion is not simply "the same room minus a tub".
A tub is a manufactured watertight tray with an integral flange. It arrived at the house already waterproof, already sloped, already sealed at every corner, and all the tile above it had to do was keep spray off the wall. Take it out and none of that exists any more. The pan is now site-built: a pre-slope or a pre-sloped tray, a bonded membrane, sealed corners, a sealed wall-to-floor joint, and a drain assembly that is part of the waterproofing rather than a hole through it.
That is a real change in the work, and it is where the money in a conversion actually goes. It is also the layer that decides whether the room lasts — everything about what goes behind the tile applies from the moment the tub leaves.
Two more things go with it. Floor tile rarely runs under a tub, so pulling one out leaves a bare strip to tie back into the existing floor — and old floors around here are seldom flat enough to accept new tile without leveling first. The subfloor under a tub is also the classic place to find a slow overflow leak that has been running for years: soft sheathing, a darkened joist top, sometimes a rotten plate. We open it and look before we quote, because the alternative is quoting a guess and correcting it later.
The room gets wetter than it was
A tub gets used with the door shut and the water low. A walk-in shower with an open top throws steam into the whole room, so a conversion raises the load on the one part of the bathroom nobody thinks about. Grille size tells you nothing — what the fan actually has to move is a calculation, and this is the moment to fix it. Duct to the outside, not to the soffit vent, not into insulation.
What it costs, and what moves it
We do not publish our own prices. What we can point at is what independent research says people in this market spend on a bathroom. Angi's Indianapolis bathroom cost research and published Greater Indianapolis contractor cost guides put a typical bathroom at around $10,000, with most falling between roughly $5,700 and $14,700, and full remodels in the wider metro running from about $7,500 past $25,000.
A conversion sits somewhere in that spread depending on four things, and they are the same four that move any bathroom quote: whether the drain and the valve stay where they are, what the shower is built out of, how big and how fiddly the tile is, and what we find when the wall comes open. The tile one surprises people — format changes the labor more than the material, and a mosaic shower floor is a different day's work from a field tile.
The glass is usually the line item people have not budgeted for — ordered late, priced by the panel, and a frameless enclosure with a return panel is not a shower door.
Permits, because a drain moved
Moving a drain or changing a valve is plumbing work, and in Fishers that is the kind of change that generally requires a permit. The city takes applications online and says a complete residential submittal typically takes no more than fifteen working days. Carmel, Noblesville and Westfield each run their own department with their own rules — what actually triggers a permit here is worth reading before you assume it does not apply to you.
A permit also means an inspection at rough-in, which means somebody other than your contractor looks at the drain and the vent before they are buried. That is not an obstacle. That is a second set of eyes on the part you cannot see, paid for by the permit fee.
The short version
A tub-to-shower conversion is shopped for as a tile job and built as a plumbing and waterproofing job. The tile is the part you choose. The drain, the vent, the valve height, the pan and the blocking are the parts that decide whether it was done well, and every one of them is settled before a single tile is set.
Three things to settle before you commit. Whether the house still has a tub somewhere. Which way the joists run under the one you are removing. And what the shower floor is going to be built out of, because that is where the budget goes.
