Panel-ready appliances change the cabinets, not just the budget

Integrated appliances are a cabinetry decision made months before delivery. Spec sheets, filler panels, ventilation and the reason the order has to be placed first.

A panel-ready dishwasher arrives with no front on it. That is the product: a machine, a bag of brackets, and a page in the installation manual telling your cabinet shop exactly what front to build — how wide, how tall, how thick, how heavy, and where the fixings pass through it. The panel is a cabinet door. It gets made by the people making your doors, in the same material and the same batch. It has to be ordered when they are.

So the appliance choice is not an appliance choice. It is a cabinetry decision, made long before anything gets delivered — and the usual sequence runs the other way round. Layout gets drawn, cabinets get ordered, appliances get picked near the end. That works fine while everything is freestanding and standard width. It stops working the moment one appliance is meant to disappear into a run of doors.

Freestanding, counter-depth, built-in, panel-ready

These words get used interchangeably in showrooms. They describe different openings.

  • Freestanding — finished on its sides and top, deeper than a base cabinet. It projects past your door fronts and always will.
  • Counter-depth — a shallower freestanding box. Close to flush, but the door, hinges and handle still stand proud. Often the sensible choice, and no filler turns it into an integrated look.
  • Built-in — built to live inside a cabinet opening, flush with the door fronts, carried by the cabinetry and venting through a grille at the top rather than the back.
  • Panel-ready — a built-in with no front. You supply the panel and the handle. Set flush-inset, in the same plane as your doors with an even reveal, it gets called integrated: the tightest version and the least forgiving.

Each is a different opening, and in the built-in cases a different way of carrying weight and shedding heat. Swapping between them after the cabinets are drawn is not a substitution. It is a new drawing.

The spec sheet is the drawing

Every manufacturer publishes an installation manual with a rough-opening drawing in it, free, before you buy. That document, not the brochure, is what a cabinet shop builds to.

What we need is a model number. Not a brand, not a category, not "a panel-ready fridge in that width". Two units from one manufacturer, same width, same finish family, can want different opening heights and different hinge clearances. The difference is small. The cabinet is not adjustable.

Height, and the floor under it

An opening height is measured to the finished floor. If the flooring goes down after the cabinets, the opening shrinks by the floor and its underlayment — and a dishwasher that was going to slide under the counter now will not, or goes in and cannot come back out for service. Settle the build-up before the cabinets are set — it gets decided when the subfloor is leveled, long before anyone is thinking about appliances.

Depth, and what is on the wall behind

A built-in refrigerator only sits flush if nothing holds it out. An outlet box at normal depth holds it out by the thickness of the plug. So does a water line stubbed out with a valve on it. Both want recessing into the wall, or moving into the adjacent cabinet where a shutoff stays reachable — once that unit is flush and screwed to the cabinets, the wall behind it is gone.

Flush-inset panels need more depth again, because the whole box sits inside the opening. That depth comes out of the aisle or out of the run behind it, and somebody decides which on paper.

Width, and the filler nobody drew

A panelled door is thicker than the one the manufacturer drew for its own model, and it swings from a hinge that needs room to clear whatever sits beside it. Manuals carry a clearance chart for exactly this: how much filler to leave on the hinge side so the door opens far enough for drawers and bins to slide out past the panel. Leave it out and the fridge fits, the door opens, and the crisper drawer hits the panel every time you pull it. It is the built-in mistake we find most often. The same thing happens smaller at a dishwasher beside a corner cabinet, and at any panel whose handle catches the counter overhang.

The panel is a door, and it behaves like one

The manual gives a panel weight range, not a weight. The door is sprung, and the spring gets set on install to the panel actually fitted. Too heavy and the door falls rather than lowers. Too light and it will not stay where you leave it. A frame-and-panel white oak door and a slab MDF door of the same size are not the same weight, and a long appliance pull adds more than people assume. Give the shop the range and let it pick the construction.

Two details that get missed:

  • Thickness is specified, not chosen. Mounting hardware is cut for one panel thickness. A thicker door than the manual allows changes the reveal and can stop the door sealing.
  • The toe kick. An integrated dishwasher panel usually runs to the floor and replaces the kick in front of it. It has to match the kick either side in color and setback, or your eye goes straight to it.

Panels also move. Wood takes on moisture through a humid Central Indiana summer and gives it back in heating season, which is why the manual asks for a reveal rather than a tight fit. A panel scribed dead tight in August binds or opens a gap by February — wood doing what wood does here, not a defect.

Swing, clearance and the aisle

Every door in the room opens into the same space. NKBA guidance is a clear work aisle of 42 inches for a one-cook kitchen, and 48 inches where two people work in the same aisle or somebody passes behind a person working — measured with doors open, not closed. A dishwasher door, an oven door and a full-extension pantry pull each take a bite out of that.

Panel-ready shifts that both ways: the panel adds thickness to what swings out, the flush case gives back depth the box was stealing. Work it out on the drawing, in zones rather than a triangle, before an island moves.

Ventilation, both kinds

Two ventilation problems live in this decision and they have nothing to do with each other.

The first belongs to the appliance. A built-in refrigerator pushes its heat out through the grille at the top, which is why the cabinet above it is a shallow bridge and not storage. Crown or trim run across that grille turns a refrigerator into a warm box that runs constantly and fails slowly. If a drawing shows storage where the grille goes, the drawing is wrong.

The second belongs to the range. A wide gas rangetop with heavy burners needs far more exhaust than the hood over an ordinary range, and past a certain exhaust rate the mechanical code requires powered makeup air — replacement air brought in deliberately and ducted. We are not publishing the threshold, because it is the code and the building department, not a blog, that tell you which number applies to your house. Ask before you fall in love with the range.

That matters more in an Indiana winter than people expect. A hood with nowhere to draw from pulls replacement air through whatever leaks — under a door, down the basement stairs, or down the flue of an atmospherically vented water heater. That last one is a combustion safety problem, not a comfort problem. Hood, makeup air and any naturally vented appliance are one system.

A recirculating hood under panelled cabinetry is a compromise: the filters take grease and some odor, the heat and moisture stay in the room. Downdraft we usually argue against — it fights physics against a tall pot and eats the cabinet underneath.

The rough-in behind all of it

Built-in and professional-style appliances change what is in the walls.

  • A dedicated circuit for the refrigerator, and a heavier one than the old range when a cooktop goes induction.
  • A gas line sized for the load, which is a calculation across the whole house, not a look at the pipe.
  • A water line for ice, with the shutoff somewhere you can reach once the unit is flush.
  • The hood duct, its route through the structure and its termination outside.

In Fishers that is permit territory. The city's position is that structural, electrical, plumbing or HVAC change generally needs a permit, applications go through the online portal, and a complete residential submittal is typically no more than 15 working days. Permitting and Inspections is on 317-595-3120. Other Hamilton County cities set their own rules.

That is why the kitchen page names appliances alongside cabinets, countertop and moving services as what moves a kitchen number. It is rarely the appliance on its own. It is the cabinetry, the rough-in and the venting that arrive with it.

The order things have to happen in

  1. Appliances chosen by model number, spec sheets collected.
  2. Cabinet layout drawn against those sheets — fillers, grille space, panel sizes, toe kicks.
  3. Cabinets and panels released to the shop together, so panels are sprayed with the doors: same finish, same batch. A panel ordered later comes from another batch, and on paint that shows in daylight.
  4. Cabinets set and leveled.
  5. Counters templated on the set cabinets, with the range on site or confirmed — a slide-in wants its cutout right first time, and cutouts are the expensive half of a countertop.
  6. Appliances installed, panels hung, doors adjusted.

Change an appliance after the third step and it is not a swap, it is a change order — which is what most change orders are: a decision made later than the sequence allowed for.

Uncrate and inspect appliances the day they arrive, not the day they go in. A dented front is a manufacturer replacement on the manufacturer's schedule, and finding it early is the only leverage anyone has.

What it does to the number

We do not publish our own prices, for the reason we give everywhere on this site: a number written before anyone has seen your kitchen is a guess. What we can point at is independent research on this market, which puts a typical Indianapolis kitchen remodel in the region of $18,000 to $24,000, across a spread of roughly $8,000 to $40,000 depending on how much of the room changes.

Panel-ready lands inside that in three places: the appliance costs more than its freestanding equivalent, the panels are extra doors with custom hardware, and the cabinetry is built to tighter tolerances, with fillers and bridge boxes that hold nothing. How many units get the treatment decides where in the spread you land.

When we would talk you out of it

  • You are keeping and repainting the cabinets you have. A new panel matched to repainted doors is doable in paint. In stain it is close to impossible — new wood, different batch, different age. If the boxes are staying, repaint, reface or replace decides what a panel can ever match.
  • The budget is tight and you want the look. Panel the dishwasher, leave the refrigerator freestanding or counter-depth. That panel is one more door in a run of doors, and it buys most of the continuity for the smallest part of the money.
  • Service access matters to you. An integrated unit is screwed to the cabinets and flush to the counter. Getting behind it is a job, and every service call carries that.

The short version

Pick the appliances first, by model number, and give the spec sheets to whoever draws the cabinets. Leave the hinge-side fillers. Leave the grille clear. Settle the floor build-up before the cabinets go in, and let the panels be made with the doors. Every item on that list is cheap while it is a line on a drawing and expensive once it is a box screwed to the wall.
